Hello Friends,

This month was the Florida Native Plant Society Annual Conference. Thanks to all who presented and attended. We have moved to a new newsletter service, so please update your spam filters. This newsletter will continue to provide a mix of news and events as well as stories from our community.

Our Top Ten Native Plants

Our 2023 must-have-Florida native plants were voted on by Cuplet Fern members, and reflect our shared priorities of building our local environment's resilience and biodiversity. These plants are intended to work with the native soils of our region here in Seminole and Volusia counties while providing essential nectar, pollen, seeds, and shelter for our native bees, birds, and butterflies.

You can learn more about all of our selected plants through the linked resources provided by the Florida Native Plant Society, and bring them home to your garden and backyard habitat by visiting Lukas Nursery's newly expanded section of native plants. Check them out!

The gopher tortoise burrow as spotted one year later!

In March 2022, 16 Cuplet Fern Chapter volunteers saved 649 plants from certain death by planting them in 450 pots. A year later, at least 20 of the original 28 species continue to thrive in their new home, creating a habitat so inviting that it now hosts a previously unobserved gopher tortoise burrow, indicating potential benefits for more native species as the ecosystem matures.

Onslow Plant Rescue: A First-Person Account

Jennifer Hopton-Villalobos

February 24

The Cuplet Fern chapter engaged in a plant rescue operation in Florida aimed at preserving endangered plant species and their ecosystems. By transplanting the native flora to a new location, the project hopes to maintain the intricate soil microbial networks and plant communities that are vital for their survival.

The grant from Duke Energy and partnerships with organizations like Lyonia Environmental Center have helped in building programs and monitoring the rescued plants. The high survival rate of the transplanted plant communities will provide pollinators, birds, and others with food and shelter. The project's success will lead the way to future projects.
